DTMF

Dual Tone Multi-Frequency

System used by touch-tone telephones. DTMF assigns a specific frequency (consisting of two separate tones) to each key so that it can easily be identified by a microprocessor, so yes DTMF is to blame for never being able to get through to a human voice whenever you want to speak to your bank or book a cinema ticket - yep up there with Gatsos.
